Want to Live Past 90? Drinking Coffee and Alcohol May HelpIf you feel like living longer means having no fun, a new study has good news for you. Researchers at the University of California Irvine have discovered that people who drink coffee and alcohol in moderation actually live longer than those who abstain from both types of beverages.

The results came from the 90+ Study, which began in 2003 as a way to discover what makes people live past 90. The study enrolled more than 1,600 people during its lifecycle, with researchers checking in with participants every six months. During these check-ins, the study authors performed a variety of tests on participants, both cognitive and physical.

From these tests, the team discovered that those who drank moderate amounts of coffee or alcohol tended to live longer than those who didn’t drink either beverage. They also found that those who were overweight during their 70s were more likely to live longer than those who weren’t.

There was also some bad news for those who do live past age 90. The study found that more than 40 percent of those 90 and over suffer from dementia, and nearly 80 percent are disabled. Of those who suffer from dementia, about half don’t have the brain neuropathology necessary to study how much cognitive loss they’ve suffered.
